Why does it matter?

Using subjective evaluation to assess the health and well-being of individual cows, results in delayed response time and increases the risk of cows developing health issues, which impacts their well-being and productivity.

How did we solve this?

We placed monitoring sensors (Ida) on all cows and connected them to the Farm Management System. After 2-3 weeks of data collection the farmer obtained insights of when a cow showed abnormal behaviour. These measures resulted in early detection of lameness, or of heifers experiencing calving difficulties, which resulted in a quicker response time from farmers. As a result of this project, lameness decreased from 19% to 14% and the calf mortality declined by 4,6%. Overall, the lifetime production also increased by roughly 2.400 kg solids/cow in her lifetime.

Opportunities for other farms?

All farms with a Farming Management System could benefit from proactive action and early detection, by using connected sensors and data technology, to improve cow health and well-being.
