A balanced diet is key for ensuring animal health. Beta carotene can be introduced into the cows’ diet to improve the pregnancy rate and reduce the incidence of metritis during the lactation period.

Why does it matter?

Beta carotene is an essential nutrient found only in plants and cannot be synthetised by livestock. Therefore, it needs to be integrated into their diet.

How did we solve this?

First, we checked the beta carotene level in the cow’s blood. This information was then used to determine the amount of beta carotene supplementation needed. The amount of beta carotene required is also dependent on the cow’s lactation period. In this project, 500mg of beta carotene was supplemented 4 weeks before calving and 4 weeks after calving. After two weeks of supplementing beta carotene into the diet, the beta carotene blood level increased from 2 to 3 (µg/mL).

The integration of beta carotene into the diet presented  good results for cow longevity, milk production and farm profitability. Additionally, the conception rate increased by 14,7%, the pregnancy rate increased by 4,2%, and the placenta retention was 13,5% lower 24h post-partum.

Opportunities for other farms?

Supplementation of beta carotene is relevant for farms facing fertility or longevity issues. This solution should be combined with other actions to improve cow health and welfare.
