Why does it matter?

Family farms with less than 60 cows represents 40% of the milk produced in Mexico. These small milk producers face several obstacles to connect to higher value markets, such as, low technification, quality and productivity, in addition to the effects of climate change and high selling price volatility.

How did we solve this?

In 2010, Danone Mexico together with Danone Ecosystem, TechnoServe and the government of Mexico, launched Margarita, a program developed to strengthen dairy farming in Mexico by consolidating resilient business models and farming systems. In June 2019, the Interamerican Development Bank and Plataforma Nuup entered the program.

After a month, the milk yield increased by 1.5 kg per cow per day, and the milk fat content increased by The project contributes to helping develop sustainable businesses, supporting rural development, and improving the quality of life of small producers, while securing milk procurement in the region. The program eases access to a wide range of services such as credit, training, technical assistance on milk and feed production, innovation and investing in common goods.

Margarita has supported more than 500 small-scale low-income dairy farmers, allowing them to move from basic production practices in an unstable and unreliable market, to a more prosperous scenario. We have increased their revenue three-fold, reduced carbon emissions by 13% and assessed 100% of the farms on animal welfare.

Opportunities for other farms?

This program is an opportunity for all dairy smallholders in Mexico to increase the resilience of their farm and strengthen their business. It is also an inspiration for many other countries around the world on how to leverage collaboration and concretely support smallholders in the field and make them fully part of the journey towards more profitable, sustainable and resilient farming.
