Why does it matter?

To ensure sustainable strawberry production, producers must keep their soil healthy, while keeping production high and costs low. For farmers and growers, implementing new sustainable processes can be complex and costly.

What is the initiative?

Danone teamed up with its long-term partner SVZ, a leading global agro supply chain provider of processed fruit and vegetables, to proactively support farmers who are looking to embrace greener farming practices. The pilot farms’ two main objectives were to reduce plastic waste and to regulate pests using biocontrol. To achieve the first objective, plastic mulch was replaced with biodegradable paper mulch, and to achieve the second objective, biocontrol plants were planted between the plant rows. The project expects to see benefits such as improved soil health and biodiversity. Additional results from this pilot will be available soon.

Opportunities for other farmers?

Both of these practices are suitable for all strawberry producers who would like to make their production more sustainable.
