Alternatives to soy
Lupin can be a good replacement for soy in an animals diet due to its protein content.

Why does it matter?
Currently, a lot of research is being carried out to find alternatives to soybean meal. Among the protein crops that could replace soybean meal, lupin has the highest protein content (35% crude protein). There is a lot of lupin production in Europe, which may be beneficial to soil health and for reducing GHG emissions. However, further research is still required to assess the expected impacts. A recommended approach would be to test the soil and local conditions, to develop an appropriate action plan.
How did we solve this?
We carried out an assessment of the local conditions to tailor the approach for lupin production. The project also required us to assess diet reformulation when using soybean meal alternatives, to ensure animal health and productivity.
The protein content in lupin is 35%, but this is not high enough to completely replace soybean meal used in the diet. Using lupin as a soybean meal replacement is beneficial as the lifetime production of cows is expected to remain stable, and lupin crops require less fertiliser. However, the yield (t/ha) of feed is low and lupin production is not cheaper than purchasing soy. This pilot did not have significant results, therefore, further investigation of local production of proteins alternatives to soybean meal is required.
Opportunities for other farms?
This practice is suitable on farms where climate and soil conditions are suitable for growing lupin. It is important to note that lupin production can also be beneficial for soil health.
