We transformed highly nutritious by-products, specifically yeast, into animal feed, to help reduce costs.

Why does it matter?

By-products from food production may be an excellent feed source for cows and can replace imported feed.

How did we solve this?

Food companies may produce a wide range of by-products when they create their core products. These by-products may be full of protein, energy, and digestible fibres. We introduced one of these by-products, yeast, into the diets of our cows.

Every two months, the pilot farm purchased yeast from a supplier located within 200km. Gradually, rapeseed and sunflower meals were partially replaced, without any impacts on cow welfare or performance. Overall the farm saved 16 euros/cow/year.

Opportunities for other farms?

It is possible to use a wide range of suitable by-products for cow feed, if high quality food suppliers are available nearby and on-time delivery is assured. This transforms food waste into valuable feed, which may lead to a decrease in the environmental footprint of the farm.
