Why does it matter?

Grooming is a natural behaviour that helps cows to cope with stress, flies, shedding coats, and dust. Animal welfare improves when the herd is able to express natural behaviour. ‘Freedom to express normal behaviour’ is one of the ‘5 Freedoms’ listed by the Farm Animal Welfare Council, to meet high animal welfare standards. We are working to ensure the 5 freedoms of animal welfare are present on all our farms, for all species.

How did we solve this?

To enable cows to better express their natural grooming behaviours, we installed FutureCow ComfortBrush brushes in the barn. These brushes are heavy-duty 48 inch rotating, hourglass-shaped brushes that help keep dairy cows clean, relaxed and comfortable. Each ComfortBrush can serve a maximum of 60-100 animals.

To install the brushes, we first examined the barn, to ensure there was a suitable location and sufficient technical capability (power and voltage) present. After installation, the equipment and gear box were periodically examined to check for any potential damage or issues.

As a result of this project, we observed improvements to cow health in terms of, skin health,. The project also improved animal welfare through , increased grooming time, reduction in fly and parasite induced stress, and in general we observed more calm and relaxed cows. The project had no impact on productivity.

Opportunities for other farms?

Any farms interested in improving animal health and welfare can look at implementing cow brushes in their barn (once checked location and technical capability is present) as a way of helping dairy cows better express their natural behaviours.
