Better Herd Monitoring Using Connected Sensors
Using connected sensors to better monitor changes in herd health status.
Last updated on March 24th, 2023
Why does it matter?
Monitoring cows with sensors allows farmers to better monitor changes in the herd’s health status, increasing a farmer’s chances of identifying a cow that needs attention and allows farmers to see patterns they would otherwise miss. Optimising herd management contributes to improved animal welfare and productivity.
How did we solve this?
We placed monitoring sensors (Ida) on all cows and connected them to the Farm Management System. After 2-3 weeks of data collection the farmer obtained insights of when a cow showed abnormal behaviour, such as experiencing heat stress. Based on Ida feedback, action plans were created for cows that needed attention.
This project contributed to improving cow health, welfare, and longevity. Results include 21% in milk productivity, 31% reduction in youngstock, and 13 day increase in the inter-calving period. Furthermore, the increase in productivity also resulted in reduced GHG emission (21% reduction in kg CO2 eq/kg FPCM).
Opportunities for other farms?
All farms with a Farming Management System could benefit from using connected sensors and data technology to enable proactive action through early detection, improving cow health and well-being.
